There are plenty of ferries covering the short hop between Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. If you catch a morning ferry to Koh Samui, it is very possible to make it back to Koh Phangan the same day. There is a large police station at Nathon which is sometimes used as a place to renew visas.

The fastest option is the Lomprayah Catamaran which takes just 30 minutes on a good day. The larger Raja Car Ferry takes 1. hours, the Songserm High Speed Ferry takes 45 minutes. Seatran Discovery also runs a service that takes about 30 minutes. All these boats leave from Thongsala.

For those staying at Haad Rin Beach there is the Haad Rin Queen that leaves from the small port next to Sunset Beach (Haad Rin Nai). It is a small boat and gets very crowded around the time of the Full Moon Party. You can buy a ticket at the pier.

The other boat not leaving from Thongsala is the Thong Nai Pan Express. You buy tickets on the boat. Like the Haad Rin Express, it is a small boat and only makes the journey to Nathon in Koh Samui during the calm waters of the summer.

Ferry companies sometimes change the ports they use in Koh Samui, depending on the weather. Generally speaking, Lomprayah uses Maenam Pier and Nathon Pier.
